Nissan: Nissan DeltaWing Showcased at Los Angeles Auto Show

– Revolutionary Racecar Establishes New Ground In Weight Reduction, Fuel Consumption; Fresh Off Top-Five Finish at Petit Le Mans –
This release contains: 1 Related Document, 25 Photos

LOS ANGELES – Southern California gets its first look at the revolutionary Nissan DeltaWing racecar at the 2012 Los Angeles International Auto Show, which runs at the Los Angels Convention Center from Nov. 30th through Dec. 9th.  The low-slung ground missile features half the weight, aerodynamic drag, tire wear and fuel consumption of normal endurance racing cars while remaining competitive on track.

The car's unique shape allows for excellent downforce without the use of extra aerodynamic wings.  Its 4.0-inch wide front tires and narrow track present a unique solution to high-speed handling.  Light vehicle weight and low drag enable DeltaWing to use an ultra-light 1.6-liter Nissan DIG-T Turbo engine that gets its origins from the Nissan JUKE crossover.  The smaller displacement, high fuel efficiency of the Nissan engine also translates into fewer refueling pit stops over the course of endurance competitions.

Originally designed by racing engineer Ben Bowlby as a concept for future Indy Car racing, the groundbreaking project was brought to fruition by Nissan and its partner Michelin with a target to race at the famed Le Mans 24 Hours in France.  The entire development process was only 100 days – an astonishingly short span for preparing an all-new machine for endurance racing.  Once at Le Mans, Nissan DeltaWing posted competitive times and hit nearly 200 mph on the famed Mulsanne Straight.  After an early cooling issue, DeltaWing was in a viable position to finish the race when another racecar crashed into it and damaged the vehicle in hour six, taking it out of action.

The repaired DeltaWing triumphantly returned to competition on Oct.20, 2012 at Petit Le Mans 10-hour race near Atlanta, GA.  Driven by American Gunnar Jeannette and Spaniard Lucas Ordonez – the inaugural Nissan PlayStation GT academy winner – the car not only completed the race, it finished fifth overall out of more than 40 entrants.

The car consumed half the racing fuel and tire wear of its closest competitors, validating the initial targets.

"The guys did an incredible job," said Bowlby.  "This car is still surprising us all.  To have reliability like that was really quite incredible – it didn't skip a beat."

The American Le Mans Series (ALMS) has approved the design for participation in next year's competition, but for now, the car on display Nissan's Los Angeles Auto Show stand is the only example in the world.

The Nissan DeltaWing was recently awarded Automobile Magazine's "Racing Car of the Year for 2012," as well as Evo Magazine's "Innovation of the Year."  Designer Ben Bowlby was presented the Dino Toso Award as top racing aerodynamicist by Race Tech magazine in the United Kingdom. The car was also awarded by Popular Science as one its "Best of What's New" winners and was nominated by Autosport Magazine in the UK as a finalist in its Racing Car of the Year Award.

Nissan: Infiniti Makes Record Increase, Nissan Continues to Improve in J.D. Power & Associates Sales Satisfaction Survey

Company names Leon Dorssers chief customer officer, engages customer experience task force to accelerate momentum
This release contains: 1 Related Document, 1 Photo

FRANKLIN, Tenn. – Today, J.D. Power and Associates announced in its annual Sales Satisfaction Index (SSI) StudySM that Infiniti ranked second overall in the luxury segment, which is up six rank positions from 2011.

The study shows that both Infiniti and Nissan continue to improve the experience that customers have when purchasing a vehicle. Infiniti posted a 52-point year-over-year improvement and a 56-point improvement over the last two years. Nissan saw a 10-point increase year-over-year and a 47-point increase over the last two years.

"Nissan is committed to improving the customer experience at every touch point and ongoing efforts will demonstrate how we are making sustainable improvements," said Nissan Americas Vice Chairman Bill Krueger. Nissan currently is in the midst of the launch of five new vehicles in 15 months.

To accelerate progress in this area Nissan has appointed Leon Dorssers as its first chief customer officer as part of the formation of a customer experience task force chaired by Nissan Americas Vice Chairman Bill Krueger. The task force prioritizes projects designed to enhance the customer's interaction with the company across the entire ownership timeline.

As chief customer officer, Dorssers will maintain responsibilities as vice president, customer quality and dealer network development (CQ and DND) for Nissan Americas. The customer experience task force will work to improve the ability of the company to work across functions such as Sales and Marketing, Parts and Service and Finance to provide solutions that better meet customer needs and that help Nissan to continuously improve in each of these areas.

"As research improves and helps us better understand how people make decisions, we have much more opportunity to improve the customer experience with Nissan and Infiniti across the entire consideration, purchase and ownership timeline," said Dorssers. "It's easier to lose a customer than to earn one, and customers tend to be less likely to forgive a negative experience than they are to remain loyal to you for providing a good experience. That means integrating the voice of the customer across all potential touch points. Instilling a customer-centric culture is imperative to optimizing customer experience for all Nissan and Infiniti products and services."

Nissan: Nissan Hi-Cross Concept Previews Future Crossover Design and Technology Direction

– Innovative Next-Gen Crossover Design Showcases Hybrid Technology, Bold Styling –
This release contains: 1 Related Document, 22 Photos

  • Makes North American debut at Los Angeles Auto Show

  • Features innovative "one motor/two clutch" hybrid drivetrain with fast-charging compact lithium-ion battery technology

  • Seven-passenger seating

  • Design highlighted by bold character line, dramatic LED lighting and 21-inch aluminum-alloy wheels

LOS ANGELES – The Nissan Hi-Cross Concept, which makes its North America debut at the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show, offers a bold design statement about the next-generation of Nissan crossovers.  The design is dramatic and athletic, yet completely purposeful.  The dimensions are compact, yet surprisingly roomy.  And, it's fuel efficient.  The concept's hybrid drivetrain is based on a new Nissan system developed for front- and four-wheel-drive models.

"Nissan established crossover design leadership from the introduction of the highly original Nissan Murano by exploring new ideas and concepts and implementing them on a production vehicle," said Al Castignetti, vice president and general manager, Nissan Division, Nissan North America, Inc.  "The Hi-Cross Concept stretches the compact SUV envelope in design and technology, while remaining pure to Nissan's family adventure vehicle spirit."

A "High-Riding" Crossover Appearance
Though the Hi-Cross name reflects the advanced concept's unambiguous purpose as a traditional Nissan adventure-ready sport utility, the "Hi" also fits the exceptional innovation and excitement promised by the unique crossover design.  Built on a 109.4-inch wheelbase with a 183.5-inch overall length, the Hi-Cross Concept offers seven-passenger seating within its compact dimensions thanks to short front and rear overhangs, compact HEV drivetrain and efficient packaging.

The styling combines existing Nissan design cues with new elements.  For example, at the front it has a characteristic V-shaped Nissan grille set off by distinctive lighting signatures provided by the shapely headlamps.  The narrow, deeply tapered LED headlamps combine with the curved hoodline, fully flared fender lines and large 10-spoke 21-inch aluminum-alloy wheels to help provide a tall yet muscular stance.  A progressive new crossover design language is showcased, in particular, by the bold character line that extends from the hood down the high-waisted bodyside to the D-pillar.  At the rear, the Hi-Cross Concept has distinctive lighting signatures provided by stylish trapezoidal LED taillamps that echo the headlamp  design, along with a sculpted rear hatchback and extended rear roof spoiler.   Fog lamps and a deep custom Aurora Green paint treatment complete the dramatic exterior design.

Inside, the roomy interior features three rows of seating for seven occupants – deep, wide front bucket seats, a split fold-down 2nd row bench and a comfortable 3rd row fold-down bench.  Along with ample headroom for all rows, thanks in part to the Hi-Cross Concept's tall, flat roofline, the 2nd and 3rd rows fold down into a large flat floor for carrying cargo.  The Hi-Cross Concept's T-wing shaped instrument panel offers Fine Vision multi-dimensional gauges and a large central information display, bringing an elevated sense of connection for the driver and front passenger.  A sculpted center console completes the T-wing shape and matches the deep-cut, two-tone door panels and elegantly styled steering wheel.

"The Hi-Cross Concept interior design is far more practical than most show car interiors, displaying a more realistic view of what crossover customers are looking for in the real world – style plus efficiency, clever but practical features and an enhanced driving experience," added Castignetti.

The Power of Fresh Thinking
Just as the Hi-Cross Concept interior offers a roomy interior within its modest exterior proportions, the advanced drivetrain provides the power of a larger 2.5-liter engine with the efficiency, reduced emissions and design flexibility of a smaller 2.0-liter unit.

"The power behind Nissan's brand philosophy, 'Innovation that excites,' comes from our dedication to continuously exploring new ideas," said Castignetti.  "Coupling an electric motor – powered by a Nissan-developed compact lithium-ion battery similar to that utilized in the Nissan LEAF electric vehicle – with a 2.0-liter direct injection gasoline engine is another great example of the smart technology behind every Nissan."

The system's innovative approach to affordability and packaging adopts "one-motor, two clutch" technology.  The first of the two clutches is installed between the 2.0-liter engine and the electric motor.  It facilitates full decoupling of the gasoline engine when the car is in electric drive and power regeneration modes.  The second clutch, located behind the transmission, helps smooth the transition.  Decoupling the engine reduces mechanical losses and boosts efficiency of the electric motor.  In city driving, for example, the presence of the electric motor and lithium-ion battery allow the engine to be turned off frequently.  It can also be disengaged completely with the clutch and energy can be recovered effectively when braking.

This advanced hybrid system is linked to Nissan's next-generation Xtronic CVT® (Continuously Variable Transmission).  The low-friction CVT design, used on the recently introduced 2013 Nissan Pathfinder, has smaller shaft-diameter pulleys to provide the widest possible ratio coverage for enhanced efficiency.

The hybrid drivetrain also makes extensive use of battery technology developed for the award-winning Nissan LEAF.  The high output, fast-charging compact lithium-ion battery, linked to high-level motor control technology, provides acceleration assist when needed and permits downsizing of the gasoline engine for optimum economy and emissions.

"Though just a design exercise today, the Hi-Cross Concept offers an exciting blueprint for a future production Nissan crossover.  It's an idea well worth exploring," added Castignetti.

Nissan: Nissan Set to Showcase Hi-Cross Concept, 2014 GT-R and Deltawing Racer at 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show

– All-New 2013 Altima, Pathfinder and Sentra Make First Los Angeles Appearances –
This release contains: 1 Related Document, 17 Photos

  • First North American appearance of new Nissan crossover design exploration

  • New 2014 GT-R offers enhanced dynamic performance and premium interior refinements, goes on sale in January

  • Nissan DeltaWing, fresh off of Petit Le Mans Top-5 finish, showcases future racing design and technology

  • Also on display: All-new 2013 Nissan Altima, Pathfinder and Sentra – part of Nissan's "Five All-new Models in 15 Months" product revolution

LOS ANGELES – Nissan is bringing a wide-ranging collection of innovative vehicles to the Los Angeles Convention Center for this year's Los Angeles Auto Show, including the North American debut of the 2014 Nissan GT-R supercar and the Nissan Hi-Cross Concept.

Also making its first West Coast appearance is the advanced Nissan DeltaWing, which has shaken up the status quo in endurance sports car competition with its radical body design and technology that emphasizes light weight and high fuel efficiency.  In addition, the full lineup of 2013 Nissan vehicles – led by the just introduced Altima, Pathfinder and Sentra – will be on display during the run of the Auto Show, Nov. 30th through Dec. 9th.

"The dramatic Nissan Hi-Cross Concept continues Nissan's exploration of pushing the envelope in a segment, while at the same time staying true to the needs of the customer," said Al Castignetti, vice president and general manager, Nissan Division, Nissan North America, Inc., who will be speaking during the Nissan press conference on the afternoon of Nov. 28th.  "Los Angeles is a terrific market for Nissan performance vehicles, so we're also pleased to debut the 2014 Nissan GT-R here and share with racing fans the amazing Nissan DeltaWing racer."

The Nissan Hi-Cross Concept combines sculpted style with everyday utility.  It features an advanced "one motor, two clutch" gasoline/electric hybrid system and a futuristic seven-passenger interior.

The 2014 Nissan GT-R is again anchored by its world-class, hand-built 545-horsepower twin-turbocharged 3.8-liter V6 and imposing physical appearance.  For the new model year the GT-R receives a number of enhancements, including an exclusive new premium interior option.

In contrast to the GT-R's legendary "Godzilla" style muscle, the Nissan DeltaWing features a fuel-efficient turbocharged 2.5-liter Nissan engine, rocket-shaped aerodynamic body and lightweight components to gain its endurance racing advantage through exceptional handling and fewer pit stops.  The Nissan DeltaWing made a promising run at the famed 24 Hours of Le Mans last July before being struck by another race car and retiring.  It returned to competition at the Petit Le Mans near Atlanta and finished an impressive 5th overall.

"The Los Angeles Auto Show will also be the first chance for many people to see our all-new, totally redesigned Altima, Pathfinder and Sentra in person," Castignetti added.  "All three vehicles are off to impressive sales starts, with each stepping up in innovation, style, comfort and fuel efficiency versus the previous models.  I invite everyone in Southern California to come see what 'Innovation that excites' is all about during the Show."
